The Ultimate Guide to Selecting the Best Padel Racket

Selecting the right padel racket is crucial for optimising your performance and maximising your enjoyment. This comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge and insights to make an informed decision and choose the padel racket that perfectly suits your playing style and preferences.

Padel Racket Shapes

There are three primary racket shapes you should be aware of: Round, Teardrop and Diamond.

Round: Round rackets provide maximum control and forgiveness, making them ideal for beginners and/or experienced players that priorities finesse over power.

Round padel rackets have a large central sweet spot that ensures off-centre hits don't result in errant shots. They have a low weight distribution (closer to the grip) making them easier to

Teardrop: Teardrop rackets offer a balanced approach, combining medium control with a moderate level of power. They are suitable for intermediate players seeking a versatile racket that can handle a variety of shots.

Teardrop padel rackets have a medium sized, central sweet spot, meaning they have less control but more hitting power than round rackets, but more control and less hitting power than diamond rackets. Teardrop padel rackets have a medium weight distribution in the centre of the racket head, making them less easy to handle than round rackets but easier to handle then diamond

Diamond: Diamond-shaped rackets prioritise power, with a heavier head and higher balance point. This configuration enables users to generate significant hitting power, making them a popular choice for experienced players who favour offensive play.

Diamond padel rackets have a small sweet spot at the top of the padel racket, and a higher weight distribution, meaning they have less control but generate the highest ball speed.

Padel Racket Weight

Padel racket weight plays a significant role in determining manoeuvrability and power. Heavier rackets offer more power due to their momentum, whilst lighter rackets are easier to swing and control.

Beginners and young players: Lighter rackets (around 350-360 grams) are recommended for ease of use and comfort.

Intermediate players: A moderate weight (around 360-370 grams) offers a balance of control and power.

Advanced players: Heavier rackets (around 370-380 grams) provide greater power for advanced techniques and aggressive gameplay.

Padel Racket Surface

The Padel racket surface provides structural support and stability. These are usually made up of fibreglass or carbon fibre.

Fibreglass: Fibreglass is typically used for lower-end padel rackets that are less costly for consumers. Fibreglass rackets are best suited to beginners or casual players looking for a lighter, more cost effective and comfy racket.

Carbon Fibre: Carbon fibre is typically used for higher-end, more expensive padel rackets. Carbon fibre is stronger, harder, heavier and more powerful than fibreglass, and is therefore better suited to more advanced players. Carbon fibre rackets vary by ‘k’ value - this value refers to the rigidity, and the higher the number the harder the racket.

Padel Racket Core

The padel racket core is responsible for absorbing impact and providing differing levels or power and/or control. Traditionally, they are manufactured out of either polythene foam or EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate).

Polythene foam: Softer and more elastic than EVA, polythene foam is more comfortable and absorbs more vibration, but is not as precise or powerful as EVA. Polythene foam tends to be the core of choice for beginners or those who suffer with joint pain.

EVA: EVA is denser and harder than polythene foam, facilitating precise, powerful shots. EVA tends to be the core of choice for intermediate and advanced players. Densities vary between soft and hard, offering different levels of power (with harder EVA being the more powerful).

Personalising Your Grip

Choose a grip that feels comfortable to hold. An overgrip can be added to enhance grip texture and absorb sweat, further improving comfort and control.
